Mike Wolfe is expanding his footprint on the History Channel with a new series, History’s Greatest Picks, an eight-episode deep dive into some of history’s most legendary finds. But with American Pickers struggling in recent seasons, some fans wonder if this new show signals the end of the road for the long-running antique-hunting series. Here’s what we know so far.
A New Chapter in Picking
History’s Greatest Picks will feature deep dives into “legendary treasures, relics and artifacts” rather than Wolfe hunting them down on the road. The format still leans on Wolfe’s deep knowledge of antiques and collectibles, but it marks a shift from the hands-on picking that made him famous.
“I’ve been on the road filming American Pickers for over a decade, tracking down hidden gems in the most unexpected places and connecting with fascinating people who are preserving history. I’m looking forward to embarking on a new adventure while continuing my lifelong passion of picking with this series,” Wolfe said in a press release. “Viewers are in for a ride through the greatest finds of all time.”
What Does This Mean for American Pickers?
For years, American Pickers followed Wolfe and his team as they scoured barns, basements, and back roads for forgotten treasures. But ratings have reportedly dipped since the departure and subsequent passing of Frank Fritz. Unfortunately, the show hasn’t quite regained its momentum, despite a recently announced new season.
Could the announcement of History’s Greatest Picks be Wolfe is quietly moving on from American Pickers? Fans have noted that recent seasons have felt less dynamic, and with Wolfe now splitting his time between two projects, it wouldn’t be shocking if that were the case.
So far, the History Channel hasn’t confirmed any plans to end American Pickers, and History’s Greatest Picks has no official release date. If all goes well, antique lovers will have two Wolfe-led programs for the foreseeable future.
